California and Florida Lead the Way in Reporting Amber Alerts
CodeAmber.org Reports System Working Well in Some States,
Urges Law Enforcement and Media to "Come on Board" in Others

Mandeville, LA - For the second time in less than a week California Law Enforcement had to issue an Amber Alert; and for the second time this week the communication between California Law Enforcement and CodeAmber.org has been flawless.

CodeAmber.org president, Bryant Harper is quick to commend California's law enforcement in general and the Riverside and San Jose Police Departments in particular on the recent Amber Alerts event involving two young girls. "California has their act together. I hate to see abducted children reports; however when they come from California or Florida, I know we will have the full cooperation of law enforcement in getting the word out." Florida is the other state now officially reporting to CodeAmber.org. Other states report quite often, however not "officially."

CodeAmber.org is the Internet venue for reporting Amber Alerts and has been posting active Amber Alerts since August, 2002. The company maintains a live ticker which activates when there is an active alert, and also utilizes a state by state detailed information screen saver option. Both can be downloaded at no cost. It transmits an audio and visual signal on the user's computer when an alert is issued anywhere in the country, then directs the user to the local state page to receive detailed information.

Harper continues, "This is a public service. It is a three-way partnership involving law enforcement, media and CodeAmber.org. In a perfect world, Law Enforcement sends us a bulletin, including all the known facts about the abduction and pictures. It is delivered to us electronically via EDIS or email at the same time it is distributed to media outlets in the area." After CodeAmber.org receives the information and verifies it, it then distributes to media, just in case they somehow missed it. "We'd like media to do the same for us.", Harper continues, " As sporadic as the system is now, nobody can assume they are receiving information in a timely fashion." (Referring to recent incidents in Colorado, Kentucky, Nevada and Minnesota where CodeAmber.org lost precious time by not being officially notified. In those events, CodeAmber.org did receive the complete cooperation of the police departments when they were contacted, but resulted in almost 2 hours of lost post time.)

The CodeAmber.org procedure is to receive and evaluate the information from law enforcement, then to VERIFY by calling the agency issuing the Amber Alert. A determination is then made as to where CodeAmber.org will transmit the Amber Alert. Usually it is calculated by the time elapsed multiplied by 60 miles per hour.

During this most recent Amber Alert, with the complete cooperation of the San Jose Police Department and California law enforcement CodeAmber.org had photographs up and the alert issued in California and the surrounding states within minutes of verification.

The CodeAmber.org ticker receives over a half million views a day and had over 16 million in the month of May, it is headquartered in Mandeville, LA.
