GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) –
Policing the city of Greenville looks a little bit different for Officer Michelle Lentz these days.
“I can get personal messages to my inbox about people who might have a question about a parking complaint or noise on their street or a lighting ordinance. Something they wouldn’t feel comfortable calling city hall or calling the police department to ask,” said Officer Michelle Lentz, Greenville Police Officer.
Through the use of the Nextdoor App, Officer Lentz, who’s job is focused on community outreach and crime prevention, is more connected with the residents of Greenville than ever.
“We don’t go out and knock on people’s doors all the time and when we do it’s usually because there’s a problem there so having the Nextdoor app has really allowed people to talk with us and communicate with us in a positive setting,” said Officer Lentz.
Lentz began posting crime alerts and safety tips on the app when Nextdoor opened it up to law enforcement agencies nationwide. Even though she polices from her computer, the residents of Greenville know her as a familiar face.
“They say “Oh you’re the officer from Next Door, I see your posts all the time” I say thank you. It’s just really neat to know people are recognizing me and the things that I’m telling them are helping them and applicable to them in their lives and it’s cool to get that feedback,” said Officer Lentz.
That feedback helped Lentz land a big honor. Out of the 900,000 officers who use Nextdoor nationwide, the company named her as one of the 35 most engaging and appreciated.
“It’s not just me it’s the community that’s shown Nextdoor that they like and they value the things that I’m saying to them through the app,” said Officer Lentz.
She said she hopes the app will continue to help the residents of Greenville build a safer and better community.
“I try to use it as an educational piece for the community to help them understand the laws and understand they take safety into their own hands. It’s their job to be safe and we just have to teach them how to do it,” said Officer Lentz.
