The study Hollender mentioned is by Corey Rosen and Michael Quarrey, who wrote in the Harvard Business Review that in 1986, they compared the performance of 45 ESOP companies (companies that encourage employee stock ownership plans, or ESOPs) with similar companies that don’t encourage employee ownership. [1] At a global level, the Rio Earth Summit and Kyoto Protocol brought civil society and business together over environmental issues such as biodiversity and carbon reduction targets. [40] There is no way to lead a successful business without considering what real solutions it will deliver to the emerging issues of today’s world. [39] To develop a healthier world and resilient businesses, it is essential that we work to dismantle the traditional business model in place today. [39] Businesses have a duty to step up and address climate change, but in doing so, they will not only work toward creating a healthier planet, but will also have the potential to realize significant business growth. The professor of sustainability at NYU Stern is also the cofounder and former CEO of the sustainable consumer product company Seventh Generation and current co-CEO of Sustain Natural, which he runs with his daughter. [1] If you treat your employees well, if you allow them to be owners of the company, they’re more loyal, they’re more productive, there’s less turnover, and Harvard has done a study that actually shows that this translates all the way down to earnings per share in companies that are sustainable that treat their employees better.” [1] A study by Johnson Controls Inc. noted that Generation Y employees actively sought a work environment that engaged in sustainable and social practices. [2] With all of this, it is impossible to think about — or practice — sustainability without taking social inclusion into account. Today, many companies are at the forefront of the sustainable movement to further environmental legislation, greatly enhancing not only their own brand image, but also their competitive advantage. [4] This makes good sense, as we believe that it is the core of business that presents the greatest opportunity to mitigate sustainability risks and maximize the positive impact of business. [5] We need new tools and approaches that prioritize and measure the impact of sustainability in a language that resonates with business. [5] The role of business in addressing sustainability challenges has never been more important than it is today. [5] Now more than ever, the general and inf ormed public of this world are looking to CEOs and business leaders to take the lead on important issues over governments. [6]
At the Harvard Business School, an immensely popular course called “Reexamining Capitalism” explores “the evolution, power, and limitations of our current capitalist systems” and “how the “rules of the game? by which capitalism is structured should change” to address the social and environmental issues of our day. [7] The Harvard Business Review article, Competing on Social Purpose, separates companies born with a social or environmental purpose – think Patagonia, TOMS, Seventh Generation from those integrating purpose and strategy late in life. [42] SB events are designed to inspire, engage and equip business professionals to fully leverage environmental and social innovation to drive business and brand value. [6] Shared value is aimed at redefining capitalism by arguing that the competitiveness of a company is closely tied to the health of the communities in which it is embedded. 12 Conscious capitalism is a model of business that serves the interests of all major stakeholders–customers, employees, investors, communities, suppliers, and the environment. [7] Industrial and consumer products company Ricoh has concluded that by 2050, there will be an insufficient supply of many reasonably priced raw materials to support its manufacturing needs. As a result, the company is revising its business model using life-cycle analysis as the basis for decision making and establishing a series of what it calls “Resource Smart Solutions” for product design and manufacturing, reuse, collection, maintenance, and materials recovery. [7] A World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) report released at last month?s World Economic Forum identifies three types of circular innovation: process, product, and business model. [43] Is “sustainable consumption” an oxymoron? The World Business Council for Sustainable Development doesn?t think so, calling on businesses to “abandon the existing consumption paradigm” and move toward “transformations in mainstream lifestyles and consumption patterns.” 10 Several businesses and activists have sought to put such an idea into practical use. [7] Business is increasingly aligning its activities with the United Nation?s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). [43]
The “know and show” model in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights also provides an excellent conceptual foundation for legal and regulatory frameworks for other due diligence and disclosures on sustainability. [5] As you consider what your business can do to protect the environment, consider performing a sustainability audit. [3] Corporations rethink their business strategies to play a stronger role in guiding the sustainability of the systems of which they are a part. [7] Whether it is new energy systems, disruptive technologies, new business models, changing demographics, hyper-transparency, or rising geopolitical uncertainty, the operating context for companies is evolving. [5] Business will play a leading role in the achievement, or failure, of this SDG. Fortunately, more and more companies are becoming mindful of how they impact, and are impacted by, the wider world. [43] Companies looking to engage further have many resources at their disposal, such as the SDG Compass, the WBCSD?s SDG business hub, and the Global Reporting Initiative ?s reporting guidance on the SDGs. [43] Therefore, companies can remain agnostic about the science of particular issues (such as climate change) but still recognize their importance as business concerns. [7] Market transformation calls for optimizing supply-chain logistics to reduce risks from numerous factors such as disruptions due to increased storm severity caused by climate change; current and future resource availability and price volatility; accelerating emissions and concerns for public health and the environment; and the future resilience of business and civil society. [7] Stay on top of the latest facts, information and resources aimed at the intersection of business and the environment. [42] What are you doing to control resource consumption throughout your organization? Learning about ways that you can control consumption will not only save money for your business, but also it may lead to processes that prevent the waste of materials and energy. [3] Examples of business model innovation are available in the WRI report and include collaborative consumption and selling services rather than products. [43] Attention is particularly needed on limiting consumption through business model innovation. [43] SDG 12 cannot be met if business models continue to rely on increasing consumption. [43] As planning for the HLPF accelerates, it is clear that business and government need to raise their ambition levels on responsible consumption and production. [43] Business must work with government, civil society, and other actors to promote responsible consumption and production. [43] It demands new conceptions of corporate purpose, notions of consumption, and models and metrics of business success. [7] The first phase of business sustainability, what we at the University of Michigan?s Erb Institute call “enterprise integration,” is founded on a model of business responding to market shifts to increase competitive positioning by integrating sustainability into preexisting business considerations. [7] By contrast, the next phase of business sustainability, what we call “market transformation,” is founded on a model of business transforming the market. [7] While business sustainability has been going mainstream, the world has witnessed unprecedented human impacts on the natural environment that threaten the viability of life on Earth. [7] With climate change topping the list of global concerns for millennials, these planet-friendly business moves are just what Walmart needs to attract a new, younger demographic of customers. [42] This does not mean that only business can generate solutions, but with its unmatched powers of ideation, production, and distribution, business is best positioned to bring the change we need at the scale we need it. [7] We believe that innovation in stakeholder engagement offers the potential to integrate new ideas into business strategy, enable the business opportunities of the future, and support the development of more inclusive societies. [5] Effective stakeholder engagement will require innovation in three main areas: using systems-based approaches that capture more diverse voices; altering the purpose of engagement from consultation to collaboration; and reforming internal company engagement mechanisms to ensure that stakeholder perspectives support business strategy. [5]
It?s been endorsed by over 50 business and environmental leaders, including Seth Godin and Chicken Soup for the Soul?s Jack Canfield. [44] Changing the way we do business is essential to addressing the challenges of environmental degradation. [7] Market transformation not only compels more systemic business strategies but also challenges traditional ways of conceiving business itself. [7] Business is responsible for producing the buildings we live and work in, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the automobiles we drive, the energy that propels them, and the next form of mobility that will replace them. [7] A business going green makes customers feel that it is a trustworthy business. [45] To understand the benefits of a business going green we must first understand what that term means. [45] When it comes down to it the benefits of going green for a business, the benefits far outweigh any negatives. [45]
The ability to market sustainable goods, services, and processes to three different types of consumer: the Deep Green, who makes purchasing decisions contingent on social responsibility; the Lazy Green, who will do the right thing if it?s convenient; and the Nongreen, who is indifferent or even hostile to a sustainability agenda, but who will happily buy green products and services if they are positioned as superior (more comfortable, more durable, less toxic, etc.). [44] Real sustainability is a property of a system. 7 For example, the notion of an energy company installing a wind farm and calling itself sustainable makes no empirical sense. [7]
Today, more than 90 percent of CEOs state that sustainability is important to their company?s success, and companies develop sustainability strategies, market sustainable products and services, create positions such as chief sustainability officer, and publish sustainability reports for consumers, investors, activists, and the public at large. [7] BSR’s vision for sustainability reporting is the achievement of two important outcomes: informed decision-making by stakeholders (including shareholders) and improved sustainability performance at companies. [5] Corporate sustainability is important for all of the reasons Carl Dierschow pointed out in his answer. In 2013, Nielsen surveyed 30,000 consumers and 42 percent of those consumers in North America agree they would pay more for products from sustainable sources. [15] It is clear that this is a new process for them and they are still working on efficiently integrating sustainability at the heart of their business model. [15] In practical terms, all the strategies under sustainability have been co-opted from other business movements like Kaizen, community engagement, the BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal), talent acquisition and so on. [13] Influential conferences such as the Boao Forum for Asia, regional business media, and international thought leaders heavily promote sustainability as a”must have” element of a company?s strategic future. [9] Sustainability encompasses the entire supply chain of a business, requiring accountability from the primary level, through the suppliers, all the way to the retailers. [13] A group of high -profile business leaders offered their thoughts on the sustainability agenda right here at HBR (I am also an adviser to that effort). [47] Awareness of sustainability as a business concept is not lacking among business leaders in Asia. [9]

[9] Larry Fink, the CEO of BlackRock (with $6 trillion in assets under its management) asked business leaders to focus on “long-term value creation” in his third annual letter to S&P 500 CEOs. [47] Any remaining business leaders who don?t understand climate as a systemic risk and opportunity will have to get on board. [47]
Sustainability provides a larger purpose and some new deliverables for companies to strive for and helps them renew their commitments to basic goals like efficiency, sustainable growth and shareholder value. [13] As businesses are interested in incorporating sustainability into their businesses, they will invest their time and money to experiment and innovate best methods of attaining their sustainable goals. [14] Some organizations are taking sustainable production to the next level by challenging businesses to think about how to create a positive, or regenerative impact on the environment, rather than producing a negative one in the form of extracting natural resources and creating greenhouse gases from energy use. [46] The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency broadly describes sustainable manufacturing as the process of producing manufactured goods through the use of eco-friendly practices and materials that aim to reduce harmful impacts to the environment while conserving energy and protecting our natural resources. [48] Many industries are now adopting sustainable manufacturing practices in response to this increased focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship. [48]
It was clear that helping to implement those practices was important, but I was much more eager to learn about how sustainability had been executed at music festivals than baseball games. [16] In the decades that have followed, the emphasis on adopting eco-friendly practices, implementing sustainability measures, and protecting the environment has continued to grow, gaining traction across diverse industries, sectors, and settings — including the manufacturing world. [48] While many large companies have developed sustainability best practices, medium and small businesses are yet to do so. [14]

[46] Lack of access to key natural resources is one of the classic reasons that companies would choose to shift toward more sustainable practices. While EHS and sustainability can overlap, EHS is about creating management systems to solve that environment, health and safety issues in a business context, while sustainability puts those management systems into the larger system of the organization, the customers, the value chain and the community where the business operates. [12] What are some of the different ways companies are approaching sustainability? Application of sustainability principles can vary widely depending on the type of business and the dominant strategies of the company. [12] Despite the current political climate, business leaders commitment to corporate sustainability appears to be on track both in the U.S. and globally. [20] Corporate sustainability is a business approach that embraces opportunities and manages risks derived from those three factors. [20] These interviews with experts and corporate decision-makers provide an overview of sustainability, including how it?s changing business today. [12] Linking sustainability goals to business outcomes is not only vital, it?s also very often missing from the storyline. [19] Each business has to define sustainability for itself based on its individual goals and markets. [12] The benefit will be better buy-in across the business for goals that measurably reduce environmental and social impacts while at the same time creating more business value. [19] The first step is to apply a more disciplined approach that focuses on material issues and uses data to link the goals to the business, environmental and social context and desired outcomes. [51] Not only can the partnership boost your business credibility among sustainably-minded consumers, it can also be a source of referrals from the charity that can help you increase market share to grow your business. [18] Greenhouse gas emissions are associated with many different aspects of a restaurant business from electricity, propane, and natural gas used in operations, to fuel used in employee commuting and embedded energy in supply chain activities. [51] This enables company employees to approach their business relationships with a renewed sense of pride and responsibility. [12] This includes all groups of people that affect, or are affected by, the business including employees, suppliers, customers, community members, local non-profits, government and others. [51]

That would get the attention of those responsible for capital allocation in the business. [19] Most argue that it makes good business sense to be a responsible citizen of our blue marble. [50] It is sometimes a force for good–or at least a mouthpiece for good, as evidenced by the nearly 2,000 titles in Amazon’s “Green Business” category. [50] Here are 10 recommended green books for CEOs and other business leaders. [50] Today, EHS managers need more than just technical answers to technical questions: They need strong management and communication skills, as well as a solid understanding of how the business operates. [12] A water-intensive industry such as mining or food production would begin by asking how much water is required to realize its revenue growth ambitions and then determine if sufficient water is available in the future in the regions and supply chains where it does business, given that other water users in the region will be competing for the same limited supply. [19]
Therefore, the initial indication is that although U.S. companies may face less pressure to be more sustainable in the current political climate, the majority will continue their sustainability efforts for more reasons than one, including the fact that the majority of their workforce and global customer base demands it today. [20] Why is sustainability a trend that corporations should pay attention to? It has been demonstrated by financial analysts that sustainable companies outperform their competitors in terms of long-term shareholder value. [12]
In the long run, a sustainable enterprise will eventually re-examine all of its policies and practices to ensure that respect for human dignity and environmental integrity are woven into the identity of the company. [12] One of the ways in which this is being done is through sustainable building practices. [17] In 2013, the industry took a giant step in the right direction when the Events Industry Council’s Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) and ASTM International, in collaboration with the Green Meeting Industry Council, released their standards for sustainable meetings. [21]
Sustainability includes these green practices, but goes much further–it describes the fundamental relationship of a company to society. [12] A supply chain sustainability engagement program can help address issues in the supply chain by collecting information on the current practices of the company?s significant suppliers, and then working with those suppliers to help them implement more sustainable practices and understand the benefits. [51] Sustainable practices can help minimize waste, conserve energy, and even save money. [17]
Sustainable sourcing of products and services considers environmental impacts as well as workers’ treatment. [18] Companies that emphasize product differentiation have developed “sustainable design” protocols and conducted life cycle assessments to support their claims in the marketplace. [12] The countries with the biggest share of Global 100 companies on Forbes 2017 “The World?s Most Sustainable Companies” list were the U.S. (19), France (12), UK (11), Canada (6), Germany (6), and the Netherlands (5). [20] The most committed companies educate customers about becoming more sustainable themselves. [50] A sustainable enterprise enhances its competitiveness by addressing the broader needs and concerns of its stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, regulators, advocacy groups and the communities in which the company operates. [12] “Being sustainable and responsible for the environment is part of the DNA of IACC members,” said Kate Bacon, IACC Customer Relations and Events Manager. [21] Sustainable companies are both environmentally and socially responsible. [12]
The triple bottom line of social, environmental and financial benefits gained from sustainable sourcing is often referred to as the three Ps — people, planet and profits. [18] Sustainable sourcing can increase your site or store’s reputation and social impact. [18]
More than just a catchphrase, sustainable sourcing is an effective way to set your eCommerce website or store apart by elevating your brand image, capturing more market share, reducing operating costs and potentially charging a premium for products. [18] Entrepreneurs will instantly relate to many of its tenets for a sustainable strategy, including that cash flow matters more than quarterly earnings, that everyone’s operating environment is undergoing massive change, and that internal cohesion and flexibility are required in a chaotic external world. Another important sustainability issue for restaurants are the impacts across their entire value chain, and the types of food products they are purchasing and serving to customers. [11] MIT Sloan Management Review and The Boston Consulting Group, which have been tracking developments in corporate sustainability for the past eight years, found in their most recent 2017 survey that 90 percent of companies consider a sustainability strategy important to remaining competitive. [20] Will Corporate Sustainability Continue To Be Important? Based on the accolades and initiatives described above, sustainability is alive and well in Corporate America. [20] It?s important for the preservation and sustainability of our earth as well as the health of our future generations. [17]
Nearly three-quarters of employees say their job is more fulfilling when they are provided with opportunities to make a positive impact on social and environmental issues, and 70 percent would be more loyal to a company that helps them contribute to important issues. [20] Financially integrated corporate environmental and social goals are important to these investors because they provide forward-looking assessments. [19] Why Is Corporate Sustainability Important? So, why has sustainability become a bigger focus in Corporate America over the last decade? For many corporations, the drive was initially cost savings. [20] Interdepartmental teams help to break down the silos within an organization and create discussions around important sustainability challenges and opportunities faced by each different department. [51] Sustainability has become increasingly important as an evaluation criterion for meeting planners, and venues are often asked about their implementation of specific green initiatives as part of a bid. [21]
One way to increase your business’ market share is to align your products and services with customer populations that highly value sustainability. As our world continues to address the pressing issue of water scarcity and security, businesses will be wise to develop efficient practices that mitigate risk against future water regulations and build long-term resiliency within their operations. [51] Greener practices from all businesses are now top concerns for consumers. EHS managers are the corporate leaders who drive environment, health and safety policy and translate that policy into practice. [17] Venues are finding that initiating sustainable practices is as good for the bottom line as it is for the planet. [21] Within the restaurants, sustainable practices will benefit a business?s bottom line by reducing operating costs. [51]
Creating positive impact by allocating capital towards projects and programs aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals is not just on the minds of the 25 percent of Fortune 500 companies signing on, but also investors such as CalPERS, the Rise Fund, PGGM, Aviva and others who publicly have committed their support. [19] Much of the above material is derived from his latest book, “Design for Environment: A Guide to Sustainable Product Development”, published by McGraw-Hill in 2009. [12] About three in four Millennials (74 percent) and Generation Z consumers (72 percent) are willing to pay more for sustainable products and services, according to The Nielsen Company. [51]
As consumers grow accustomed to these models and want to reduce waste and–perhaps more important to them–spending, the only thing left in the landfill may be old buy-it-keep-it models of commerce. [50] It?s important to start with the development of a comprehensive energy management plan which should include the use of an Energy Management System (EMS) to allow for real-time tracking and monitoring of energy use across facilities. [51]
City Council Resolution The City of Eugene is committed to promoting a sustainable future that meets today?s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Our Perspective As good stewards of resources, it is important to consider the environmental and health effects of products, from raw material extraction all the way through the ed of the product life. [24] The existential purpose behind sustainable and responsible business functions as an end-in-view i.e. it is not a final telos to pursue, but a desirable, prized future that offers a response to the problems and challenges we face in the present. [23] Frustration with managing in this context and concern that this environment might erode the customer value proposition prompted their exploration of how a business might prioritize its investment in intangibles to support sustainable value creation. [52] Ethics and values are important within a business organisation because they influence morals and decisions within an organisation and need to be present in order to promote business sustainability. [52] An important theme within some of the papers in the SI relates to their employment of philosophical pragmatism (also known as American pragmatism) as a key to understanding the way in which valuation has come to operate in business and society debates. [23] The goal of this collection of papers is to go beyond theory in studying the ways in which these mind-sets become embodied practices, shaping our lifestyles as well as our ethical or unethical behaviour through everyday habits, intuitions, and emotions. [23] Based on the UN’s targets and indicators for the SDGs, the SDG Compass, a list of ” Good Life Goals ” set by lifestyle consultancy FUTERRA and advice from SME executives, small businesses can adopt the following practices to start taking SDG action.
