Code Amber's Multi State Amber Alert Activation Protocol
I will use the Amber Alert issued March 2, 2009 in California for this example.
We activated the Amber Alert at 10:43 AM CT for California with the initial information placed in the News Feed and the Tickers. State Code CA in the Feed and California as the affected area in the Tickers. We had verifiable vehicle information including license number so this activated the Walgreens signs in California.
Shortly thereafter, at the request of California, Oregon activated their Amber Alert system for the child. At this time we updated the Feed State Code with (CA,OR) at the same time we updated the Add State Code to OR which turned on the Walgreens signs throughout Oregon. The Ticker affected area was updated to California and Oregon.
About an hour later, at the request of California, Nevada activated their Amber Alert System for the child. At this time we updated the XML State Code with (CA, OR, NV) at the same time we updated the Add State Code to (OR,NV) which turned on the Walgreens signs throughout Nevada. The Ticker affected area was updated to California, Oregon and Nevada.
The child was recovered safe and the incident closed a little after 6 PM CT the same day. The duration of the Amber Alert was about seven and a half hours.
As Marc Klass once said "You have to assume these kids are moving at 60 miles an hour so, if it takes 3 hours to activate the Amber Alert you are dealing with a 360 mile radius for your search area."
